Notes

SCENE: A female protester joins the march over Petrus Bridge in Alabama,1965 led by Martin Luther King to secure the right for all to freely vote. Her feet are blistered, she is burnt by the sun and objectors throw verbal abuse at the marchers. She is afraid but bravely continues. Ultimately she is moved to compassion for her abusers and finally sings fragments of lines from “The Divine Image” by William Blake. This is based on a true story by Hella Pick, an Austrian journalist who was rescued from Nazi Germany as a child. She was chosen to report the march for freedom by The Guardian newspaper. The character of The marcher is based on Hella’s specific reporting of a nun who had joined the march.
