Notes

A very short set of miniatures for solo piano, these pieces distil some of the key musical ideas and materials I was exploring in 2007 into a highly concentrated form. Numbers 1, 3 and 5 demonstrate most clearly my ongoing interest in South African music for musical bows, specifically that of the Xhosa-speaking people, but other voices inevitably intrude. Number 2’s exploration of metric modulations is typical of some of my pieces from this time –  this technique is less prevalent in more recent works, though not abandoned – and Number 4 is a typical study in melody, though the texture is perhaps unique in my music.

Five Miniatures was written for the Living Composers Project, and premièred at The Space, London by Anne Lovett in March 2007.
