Notes

Cenotaph was written for my son Pablo Díaz Sánchez. It draws most of its musical material from Barry Martin’s two-dimensional fractal Hopalong. Numerical data from the fractal’s mathematical equations is mapped onto musical parameters to generate raw musical material with which the work is constructed. This mathematical framework creates a hidden structure that gives unity and coherence to the overall form of the piece.

First performed at Real Academia Canaria de Bellas Artes, Tenerife, Spain, October 2011 by Pablo Díaz Sánchez (violin) and Gustavo Díaz-Jerez (piano).
