Notes

Guitar in Australia is big. I have attended part of a national guitar festival in Darwin, Northern Territory, and as a former guitarist was deeply impressed by the quality of the playing there. This piece partly arose from that experience, and partly from working with a young, hugely talented violist and guitarist, Jennifer Brown (now Jennifer Heinrich), who as violist was the youngest member of the Bendigo Symphony Orchestra which I was privileged to conduct in 1981. Since then, her guitar skills have developed alongside her numerous other capabilties, so that after a brief return visit to her family in Bendigo in 2002 I was driven to write a work reflecting on these Australian guitar experiences, a piece which is named after Jenni Heinrich’s beautiful estate, Pilbara Park, just outside that city. It is also dedicated to her. The structure is free and contemplative, and the music deeply personal.
