Notes

The music of Vox Dei is based on the sound of Bangor Cathedral’s main bell, deriving its pitch and rhythmic structure from the its first 34 overtones. Similarly, the text is based on the first 34 words (in the Latin text) of Psalm 18:

The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech,
and night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words,
whose voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world…

Vox Dei is a companion piece to the installation Vox Populi, which is concerned with words that people speak to God. Vox Dei concerns God speaking to people – without words.

Performance of this work requires an electronic tape part, which will be delivered via file transfer service upon purchase of the score.
