The Song of Margery Kempe was first conceived in 1999, as a kind of radically stripped-down follow-up to my earlier opera Hildegard von Bingen (1997). An a cappella one-woman piece on Margery – a real housewife from medieval Norfolk – simmered in my head for a while, stimulated by reading her autobiography (the first in the English language) The Book of Margery Kempe. Sketches for the libretto and music were made on and off over the years, with the libretto being finalised at the beginning of February 2008 and the music complete by the end of April.
