Notes

During my first year as Kettleʼs Yard New Music Fellow, Michael Harrison curated the exhibition ʻA Measure of Realityʼ. It was a beautifully curated show and contained work that Michael was really passionate about.

Richard Long – one of the artists featured – made the piece Crossing Stones in 1987. A documentation of a walk, its text reads: Ê»a stone from Aldeburgh beach on the East coast carried to Aberystwyth beach on the West coast / a stone from Aberystwyth beach on the West coast carried to Aldeburgh beach on the East coast / a 626 mile walk in 20 days / England Wales England / 1987ʼ.

In homage to the English experimental composers that Michael loved, I have translated the contours of this journey into a line for ʻcello, accompanied by its open strings.
