‘Hocket Box’ is, more than anything else, an exploration and experimentation of form. Unlike the immediacy of melody or harmony for example, form (or structure) is perhaps the least direct musical parameter since its recognition often requires a more intensely conscious form of listening and its appreciation can only be entirely experienced in retrospect, i.e. once the piece has finished. I therefore wanted compose a piece whereby the form itself served as the principle musical subject and consequently had a much more immediate and dynamic impact on an audience’s listening experience.
