This piece was the result of a fascination for a medium, which, apart from the Mozart quartets, have surprisingly few examples in the repertory (at least to my knowledge). One thinks of it being, perhaps, an essentially French sound-world, and indeed I would feel comfortable with that, although a more immediate source of inspiration would be the (similarly Gallic-inspired) Flute Quartet of 1980 by English composer Nicholas Maw, a composer I much admire, even if its considerable length (around 30’) seems to me at least, overextended – this, at around 14’, is my critical response.

A nostalgic ambience, redolent perhaps of lazy country-house summer afternoons in the 1920s’….Walton, Bliss, Lambert…
