Night Circus was written for the London Sinfonietta and was first performed at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank, London on 24 April 2009. The idea behind the piece was to present two contrasting images / spaces simultaneously to the listener. The first is poetic; reflections and resonances of the city lights are perceived from a far distance. The other is more theatrical; four different characters dodge and swerve round each other at speed and in close contact. The tension between these two spaces is what generates and structures the musical argument throughout. Watch out for brief meetings, head-on collisions and slightly dangerous flirtations…
