Notes

One of my current preoccupations is to explore unusual but generally small-scale instrumental combinations with ‘standard’ instruments in (perhaps) unlikely partnerships – these four dances (or rather three dances with an intermezzo) is the most recent fruit of this project, and I have been pleasantly surprised at how effectively these two instruments (on the surface, from different worlds) work together.

1. Fast, rhythmically tricky and mercurial

2. A kind of minuet, but often departing from its initial triple metre

3. Intermezzo, slow and expressive

4. A kind of sleazy tango

These have been recorded by Linda Merrick with the composer (harpsichord) on the Divine Art/Metier CD MSV 28568 (‘Twists and Turns’ – chamber music by Rob Keeley).
