Notes

Built upon the basic lattice of a Scherzo and Trio movement ‘Constellations’ is a piece consisting of fast linear modal passages, juxtaposed with quieter, richer, iridescent moments. In the Trio, middle section, the music is centred over a C sharp pedal, which fights through the piece with B and D to assume dominance. The climax to the piece sees the resolution to one of the principle vertical pillars of the piece and from this point the earlier quieter passages converge leaving the focus on B-natural. The title alludes to different clusters of sound and modes that constantly shift and merge. These create sonic constellations that like the night sky, create constantly shifting lights, shapes and colours that often seem to pivot around a focal point.

“Constellations” was commissioned for the Helicon Trio for the ‘Music for Lyddington’ Festival and received its premiered in December 2000.
