Notes

The girl who came to be known as La Malinche, mouthpiece and translator between Cortes and Montezuma, variously seen as mother and betrayer of her country, has had a profound effect on the actions and psyche of her own and all succeeding generations in Mexico. In 1988 I discovered and first her of her, and my obsession with Mexico began with an opera in her name, which was premiered in London in 1989.

This is a paraphrase from opera of the same name. Commissioned by Ana Cervantes and premiered at the International Cervantino Festival in Guanajuato, Mexico in October 2010.
