Eid milaad saeed means ‘Happy Birthday’ in Arabic. This short piece was written as a gift for Gary Carpenter to celebrate his 50th birthday. The work was first performed by Madis Kari at the Craxton Studios in Hampstead, London on the 4th May 2000 and as an encore performed by Mark Simpson at the BBC Proms, Royal Albert Hall, London on the 16th July 2018. The work is deliberately written in a manner free of time signatures to give the illusion of an improvised performance reminiscent of traditional improvised performances in eastern European and Arabic countries.
