I am always struck by the feeling that I am on a huge film set everytime I visit a city in the U.S.A. While sitting on the Staten Island ferry in the summer of 2010, crossing to New York City at dusk one evening, it took little imagination to envisage a large monster rising from the depths of the Hudson River.

A month later, I visited the Cathedral of the Isles, on the island of Great Cumbrae in the Firth of Clyde, and began to think about the absurdity of Godzilla appearing from the sea to eat the town of Millport. I have added a musical reference to this clash of images, with the inclusion of the melody from a Scottish hymn – Martyrs – which appears in the central section of the work.

This version was re-composed for John Cushing and the Scottish Clarinet Choir.
