Notes

The Flute Quartet was the result of a fascination for a medium which, apart from the Mozart quartets, has surprisingly few examples in the repertory. The main source of inspiration for the work, however, was the (similarly Gallic-influenced) Flute Quartet of 1980 by Nicholas Maw (1935 –2009). Bringing a nostalgic ambience, the quartet is ‘redolent perhaps of lazy country-house summer afternoons in the 1920s’ recalling Walton, Bliss, Lambert and the like.
