Notes

This work was written for the eminent violist, Rivka Golani, who was keen to have a work from the composer. Rivka was also keen to have a piece which would enable her to develop a musical relationship with the tabla, and Naresh took this into account in composing the work. The tabla has an improvisatory role, and therefore the player has no written part. S/he must be able to exercise his/her expertise within the constraints of the Western orchestral tradition.

Commissioned by Julian Gallant. First performed by the Russian Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Julian Gallant, soloist Rivka Golani, with Sanju Sahai, tabla, on 15th February 2005 at St. Johns, Smith Square, London.
