This work for Sopranos, divided into two parts, with organ, realises the metaphysical imagery of Robert Southwell’s Christmas poem through dramatic gestures and vocal rhetoric. The imitative writing for the two parts creates tension which is resolved by the use of a solo voice to represent ‘the Babe’. The organ part adds to the atmosphere with trills and flourishes.
