Notes

Martin Bussey always responds instinctively to drama in texts. The biblical story of the Road to Emmaus is a dramatic one. Jesus appeared to disciples as a stranger, walking with them, his identity only becoming apparent to them as they sat at dinner. The mystery and revelation are realised through intense harmonies and contrasts of tempo and metre. Composed for a broadcast of Choral Evensong from Lindisfarne on BBC Radio 3, the work makes striking use of unaccompanied, divisi voices in a challenging idiom.

The piece has been recorded by Sonoro, directed by Neil Ferris and can be accessed via YouTube or Spotify.
