Notes

A setting with keyboard accompaniment of W.E.Gladstone’s Latin translation of the hymn ‘Rock of ages’. The story is that the future Prime Minister worked on the translation during a debate in the house of commons. The text is part of a monument to Gladstone in Hawarden Church, North Wales, close to the castle which was his home. The musical setting came to Martin Bussey as he stood reading the text on a visit to the church, which turned out to be on the anniversary of Gladstone’s death. The melody catches the imagination of both singers and listeners and is presented in an easily accessible choral arrangement.
