Notes

In May 1940, composer Gerald Finzi was adjusting to his likely conscription to war work and the impact of this on him as a composer. In a letter to Herbert Howells, he considered philosophically the condition of a creative person ‘In days like these’. When Martin Bussey was asked by pianist Iain Burnside for a short setting of one of Finzi’s letters as part of a programme of the composer’s letters and songs, he went straight to this poignant letter. The letter references the recent premiere of Finzi’s Dies Natalis, alluded to musically in the song. The setting has been very well received in performances at Ludlow English Song Weekend, Wigmore Hall and Guildhall School of Music amongst other venues. A listener, when the composer sang it as part of a 1940s programme, described it as ‘very moving’.
