Anima Christi is a reflection on a fourteenth century text which meditates on symbolic elements of the Passion narrative. The meditative nature of the poem colours the opening and closing sections of the work. These are related, as the closing section returns to the earlier material in a major tonality.  This is founded upon a long-phrased melody. The middle section reflects both the elements of the poem most directly related to the Crucifixion (‘Within thy wounds hide me’) and the poet’s response. An increase in tempo is matched by faster moving harmony and contrasts in timbre to lead to a climax, before subsiding to the piece’s meditative ending.
