Following the premiere of my Silver Rose for brass band and narrator in 2014, narrator Robert Hardy asked me to compose a piece of music for future performance at his own funeral by Lydbrook Band, with conductor Ian Holmes, incorporating classical themes of his choice. Sadly he passed away before the request was formally recorded; however, the music was partially written and I completed this in his memory. The title is a line taken from Song by Isaac Rosenberg, the last movement of Silver Rose.

Robert Hardy’s selection of music was taken from the following works: opening violin melody from Nielsen Violin Concerto Op. 33 Movement 1 Praeludium (1911); Un Bal ‘A Ball’ from Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique Op. 14 (1830); motif from Beethoven Symphony No. 5 in C minor Op. 67 Movement 1 Allegro (1804-1808); ‘alphorn call’ from Brahms Symphony No. 1 in C minor Op. 68 Movement 4 (1884); Sibelius Symphony No. 6 in D minor Op. 104 Movement 4 Allegro Molto (1923).
