In Concertino I was interested in exploring a musical texture resulting from pre-established and intuitive melodic fields resolving in mutual integration. As the title suggests, I have referred to the notion of the baroque Concerto Grosso where a small group of solo instruments, the ‘concertino’, is opposed to the ‘ripieno’ of the orchestra. In Concertino such a divergence is questioned by an incessant search for syntactical equilibrium between the two forces. The content of the music refers to a book I wrote entitled “Other Voices“.

Concertino was the First Prize Winner of the 1995 Surrey Sinfonietta Orchestral Composition Contest in England, and was premiered by the Surrey Sinfonietta conducted by Jonathan Butcher at the Croydon Concert Hall, Croydon, on 5th February 1995.
