In 2005, I wrote an ensemble piece for Noszferatu, commissioned by the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, entitled Sikorski. This piece took as its starting point the work of the Polish composer Tomasz Sikorski (1939-88), whose approach has been described by composer Stephen Montague as using minimalism ‘to bludgeon rather than to entertain’. After finishing the piece I became aware that I could have taken the material in a different and more single minded direction, and in Sikorski B I attempt to explore this alternate route.
