Notes

Firefly Reflection for solo clarinet is built around the imagery of a solitary firefly. When I think about fireflies, I normally imagine them as a collective — their independently flickering illuminated tails combining into an energetic light show at dusk.  This piece captures the imagery of a single, lonely firefly who has been separated from its community (aka its ‘sparkle’). The glowing pulsations emitted from its tail are represented at the start of the piece, but tinged with sadness. Emerging soon after this is a declamatory, searching character which generates notable contrast with the initial pulsating idea, and soon after this, high sustained notes evoke a yearning quality which is intended to represent the firefly’s desire to find its home.
