Notes

This is an electronic piece designed for acousmatic diffusion. If you are interested in performing this work, please contact us.

This aria with three dances comes from a full length dramatic madrigal that includes dancers, soloists, vocal and instrumental ensembles, electronics and digital instruments, and video intended for streaming performance. The work is based on specially chosen texts by Bengali Hindu poet Tagore that explore the twilight area between life and death.

THE UNDERSTANDING

When I think of ages past
That have floated down the stream
Of life and love and death,
I feel how free it makes us
To pass away.

– Rabindranath Tagore

From the dramatic madrigal, On the Shores of Eternity

Stacey Fraser: Soprano

Jane Rigler: Alto flute

Jack Van Zandt: Electronics and digital instruments, video

Vocals recorded by Talley Sherwood at Tritone Recordings, Burbank, CA.

This work with video has been shown in live and online music festivals, film festivals, and concerts.
