The Shoreline of the title is the East Coast of Papa Westray in Orkney where I have a cottage right on the edge of the shore and I can hear and see Fulmars, Oyster Catchers, Sanderlings and Seals all moving within the tangle of Sea weed and Flagstone Reefs And a few (very few) human voices passing on the road remind one of the utter peace of the island.

I have been less interested in imitating the natural sounds and voices and concentrated on characteristics such as speed and rhythm e.g. the contradt between the effortless floating silence of the Fulmars and the crazy, dashing sorties of the sandelings and Plovers.

On the Shoreline is Scored for solo sopranino recorder and string septet of two violins, two violas, two cellos and a double bass.
