Duo 1 takes as its basis solely the idea of two contrasting sonic language-worlds. In my piece this translates as the two contrasting light-worlds: mellow hues of light vs. violent, piercing high tessitura writing. I use long static or gliding harmonic tones representative of soft light accompanied by heavily rhythmic articulated material representative of ‘violent’ light. Duo 1 loosely follows the structure of Boulez’s Anthèmes I: a) beginning with the same seven-tone motive, b) followed by six very short ‘verses’/’refrains’ each preceded by a quiet sustained pitch, c) the two types of material gradually meld into one single note (light) that then vanishes.
