My note to the new government is An English House because sex trafficking is an atrocious violation of human rights and it desperately needs more attention. An English House is about something that is happening right here, right now, in every town and city in this country. Media reports usually give us little insight into a trafficked person’s individual experience – necessarily so, in order to protect their identities – and so the spotlight inevitably turns to the perpetrators, leaving us with only a generalised impression of the women lost to statistics. But the anonymous woman has a name and I want to give her a voice.

Commissioned by the London Sinfonietta and Notes to the New Government – Changing Britain Festival. First performed on 9 May 2015, the Purcell Room, Queen Elizabeth Hall.
