Rubens Askenar is a Canarian composer based in London. His creative output encompasses all kinds of genres and forms, emerging from the experimentation and creation of compositional models based on multi-instrumental practice and technological development. 

Recent commissions (2018) include 'ElevenOnce' - a 50 minutes long piece for orchestra, composed in real time inside a 30 metres tall oil tank, commissioned by Keroxen Festival. A large symphonic piece commissioned by SGAE and AEOS to be premiered by Tenerife Symphony Orchestra in Santiago Calatravas' concert Hall Auditorio de Tenerife. A chamber piece for acclaimed London-based ensemble Chroma, responding to their concert series 'Awakening'. A series of audiovisual and reactive installations that explore tangible interactions between physical and digital players, as well as an implementation of these installations in a series of concertanti situations in collaboration with experimental international ensemble Resilence.

Rubens' work has been widely awarded - Priaulx Ranier Composition Prize, Alan Bush Composition Prize, Howard Hartog scholarship, Mosco Carner Award, G V Turner-Cooke Composition Award, Pullen Memorial Prize, etc. In addition, he has received several international composition awards - International Winter Festival of Brazil, 2nd prize at the international contest Frederic Mompou, Injuve Awards, Honorific mention in Colegio de España de Paris Composition Prize, etc. He has received commissions and participated in important festivals of composition such as the Mata Festival (New York), Sampler Series (Barcelona), Festival Internacional de Música de Canarias, amongst many others, having his work broadcasted internationally by BBC Radio 3, WQXR Radio, Q2 Radio (New York) RNE  and RTVC (Spain).

Rubens has received extensive training, having graduated from the Conservatory of Music of the Canary Islands with Distinction as well as expanding his studies in the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia of Rome, he has also completed a postgraduate in Composition at the Conservatory of Music of Aragon and a Master in Composition at The Royal Academy of Music of London; graduating with a DipRAM and Distinction with the highest mark ever awarded for an MMus in the composition department. Having completed his doctorate, he is currently Professor of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music.
