Mario Pagotto

Mario Pagotto and the manifold ways of Post-modernism

After the downfall of the musical “prohibitions” of the previous decades, those such as Mario Pagotto who began composing in the '90s could find their own expressive way in a totally natural manner into a completely diversified cultural spectrum, the historical reasons being the Neo-romantic school of the '80s and the fall of the Berlin wall, events which allowed to overcome the esthetic and ideologic juxtaposition between a communicative language, closer to the audience, and a strictly formal articulation requiring an effort to be understood.

The work of the Venetian composer shows a many-sided range of colours and styles, which are often gathered from clearly recognisable experiences, but in which no trace of involvement is to be found: from the Stravinskyan rhythmic tension to minimalistic processes, from the early 20th century French music, to pop music... everything is reinvented according to a strong formal discipline, which Pagotto takes from his master Franco Donatoni; a strict discipline which endows a simplicity and an immediacy to his work. (Paola Maurizi)

Mario Pagotto graduated in Musicology from the Bologna University with a thesis on Igor Stravinsky; he also gained a degree in composition and chorus-conducting with Alessandro Solbiati. He completed his studies in the Accademia Chigiana, Siena with Franco Donatoni and is holder of numerous Italian and international competitions. His works have often been performed by important concert associations in Italy and abroad and presented in outstanding festivals (Biennale” di Trieste; “Sonopoli” di Venezia; “Festival Internazionale di Venezia” della Pietà, “Soliste de l’atelier instrumental du XXe Siécle”di Lyon; Chromas “Trieste Prima”; “Rive Gauche” di Torino; Festival di Musica contemporanea di Peking; Rai Nuova Musica 2004, Torino; Nuovi Spazi Musicali, Roma; Sentieri Selvaggi, Milano; Festival dell’Aurora, Crotone; Stagione Orchestra Sinfonica Verdi di Milano; Vociferazioni, Trento, Stagione dell’Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, Teatro Luciano Pavarotti di Modena, Teatro Comunale di Sassari and Wien, London, Istambul, New York, Boston Gueldmore Hall Baltimora and many others). He has received commissions from the Symphony Orchestra "G. Verdi "in Milan, Orchestra Sinfonica  della Rai di Torino, the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, by Ex Novo Ensemble for Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Virtuoso Soloists of New York, Klavierhaus New York, Mittelfest of Udine et cetera.

Pagotto’s works have been broadcasted by Rai Radio 3, V Canale Filodiffusione and Rai Sat. In 2006 his work Fearless was selected as finalist at the International Competition for Original Music and Choreography of Alexander S. Onassis Pubblic Benefit Foundation. He has also devoted himself to conducting chamber and vocal ensembles with the aim of promoting contemporary music. He teaches composition at the Conservatory “Jacopo Tomadini” and has led Composition masterclasses at European music academies (Universität Mozarteun di Salisburgo, Cracow Music Academy - Cracovia, Conservatorio Superior de Musica Joaquim Rodrigo – Valencia, Academy of Music – Ljubljana; ESML of Lisbon, Royal Conservatoire de Bruxelles and many others)
