Throw Back received its title after the piece was completed and refers to the process the music has undergone in movements one and three. The harmonic material is based on a musical cipher of Greta Schaller’s name, the quartet’s alto player. From this, melodic and vertical harmonies were constructed for the first movement.

Fond of the harmonic language and wanting to utilize it more fully, the third movement inverts the chords and orders them in retrograde. There are of course exceptions to the rule and, as in the first movement, the chords are decorated by melodic material. The fast middle movement utilizes a similar harmonic language but is freely constructed. The focus here is on solo lines within the ensemble.
