Although gestating over a period of a decade, these songs are linked by their texts: poems by poets of the First World War.

I Le Christianisme (Wilfred Owen). First performance: Jeremy Huw Williams (baritone) and Nigel Foster (piano), St George’s Brandon Hill, Bristol, 17 October 1993 (English Poetry & Song Society concert).

II Everyone Sang (Siegfried Sassoon) Roderick Williams (baritone) and David Wickham (piano), Wigmore Hall, 4 May 1996 (Songs from the Underground concert).

III Here They Lie (Robert Graves) Jane Manning & Jane’s Minstrels, City University, 1 March 1996 (original version for soprano & small ensemble); Chen Kok Hoong & Laura O’Gorman, St Mary’s Church Hendon, 13 March 2014 (baritone & piano version).

The first performance as a cycle was given by Mark Oldfield (baritone) and Christopher Scobie (piano), Sutton House, 23 November 2014 (Stoke Newington Contemporary Music Festival).
