Notes

The Piano Quartet is to some extent modelled on the chamber music of Gabriel Fauré to whom Keeley feels very close to. This is most evident in the opening movement Allegretto, grazioso con moto where the piano and strings very much work together. This flowing music is interrupted by a sequence of moods in which the piano offers comments on long-breathed phrases from the string trio before the initial music returns briefly at the end. The second movement starts in bright, bell-like A major before subsequently moving into darker regions, from which emerges a long cantus firmus melody in opposition to a dotted-note figure shared between the strings and piano. This builds up and is eventually resolved into a light-textured coda in one-in-a-bar 3/8.
