Notes

Hoerikwaggo (Mountain in the sea) is the ancient Khoisan name for Table Mountain in Cape Town. The Cape Peninsula mountain range of which the iconic mountain is part stands isolated at the South-Western tip of Africa, separated from the ranges of mountains which lead into the interior by a large, flat plain know as the Cape Flats – hence the appearance that the mountain stands ‘in the sea’. Given this feature it is even worth noting that, further back into history, the range would most likely been an island.

Hoerikwaggo is a study of musical perspective in which the mountain is the subject. The first two movements are snapshots of the mountain, taken from different distances away from it. “Blouberg (with passing showers)”, shows the mountain from the distance at which the outline of the whole mountain range is visible, with very little detail; whilst “Adderley Street” is the main street in Cape Town CBD, over which the main face of Table Mountain itself looms). The third movement is a sequence of images of the mountain, each section presenting the mountain from a closer viewpoint. The same basic musical material is used throughout the piece, and it is largely only through compression and diminution of this material that each section develops its own character. The movement starts at a similar distance to “Blouberg…”, – again, only broad outlines are seen. Gradually the viewpoint gets closer to the mountain, until the detail is so dense and rich as to obscure any sense of scale or perspective.
