Ian Stephens

Ian Stephens (b.1974) is a composer of vocal, chamber and orchestral music. Born in Sidmouth, Devon, he studied music at Bristol University, and is based near Liverpool, where he takes a full part in the musical life of the city and the region as a composer, performer, lecturer and teacher.

His music has been widely performed in the UK and further afield by ensembles including the BBC Singers, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Northern Sinfonia, and has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3. In 2004 he was shortlisted for the British Composer Awards for Crosby Symphony Overture. He was among ten composers commissioned to write a piece for the 10th anniversary of Ensemble 10/10 in 2007.

We're Going on a Bear Hunt, his children's entertainment for narrator and orchestra, is performed by the RLPO, with Michael Rosen narrating, at the Royal Albert Hall on 1 September 2013, as part of the BBC Proms. His new work in memory of Thea King for clarinet, bassoon, horn and string quartet, Thea Dances, is performed by Ensemble 10/10 in Liverpool and Manchester in October 2013.
